ReplyDeleteSurströmming(pronounced [ˇsʉːʂtrømːiŋ], "soured (Baltic) herring") is a northern Swedish dish consisting of fermented Baltic herring. It is similar to kusaya. Similar fish is made world wide.[1] Surströmming is sold in cans, which often bulge during shipping and storage, due to the continued fermentation. When opened, the contents release a strong and sometimes overwhelming odour, which explains why the dish is often eaten outdoors.

For the upper puzzle... what is the game called? You need letters.

ReplyDeleteA short tip for those of you that might buy a can of surströmming out of curiosity:
ReplyDeleteOpen the can under water (the can should be under water, not you). That way the stench doesn't spread too much and you avoid getting stinking droplets of water on your clothes.

ReplyDelete@amberly, when you click on Sweden, a lid should open for you to see a map of Europe.
ReplyDeleteOr, do you mean that you click on Sweden in the map? You should click on the green arrows around the map (use the word SWEdEN) to know which order to click).
Well, I jumped in the swimming pool and opened the can under water and now all the people have left the pool. What did I do wrong???

I loved the game, but oh my! I watched some youtube movies where people tried to eat the stuff and they were all retching and/or vomitting. That is some weird, discusting looking food.

ReplyDeleteSince most people left this game by now I dare to say that the taste isn't bad at all. Actually there isn't much taste... it's all about the smell. With a clothes pin on the nose you won't even notice you're eating it(good for preventing water in the nose while opening the can as well lol).

ReplyDeleteI just wonder, if there is hardly any taste, why does one eat it at all? The recipes with onions, sour cream and potatoes look kinda nice though. Maybe it's the combination of ingredients which make it tasty? Just like not a lot of people like ansjovis, but when you don't say it's in a dish, they will eat it!!
I'm pretty sure I will visit your country again, so I will get me some one day.

@Ellie: Don't fool innocent foreigners into trying surströmming. If you're not an agent of the Swedish secret service biological warfare board of course. ;)
