That forest bird resembled pretty much a fox. Of course, it can be some replacement word, I don't know in English, but in my language the ancient people had many replacement words for wild animals as they believed that not calling the animals by the name will keep them away from the cattle etc. So, you can easily call the fox a "forest bird", maybe that helps to keep the fox away from the henhouse.
