That's some bad math. If every adult elephant had 4 babies then it would make sense.

each of the 7 adults has 3 babies => 3 x 7 = 21
ie elephants per herd 21 + 7 = 28
5 herds => 5 x 28 = 140
Another way to look at it: 5x7x3=105 gives you only the number of BABIES! You need to add in the 5x7=35 adults back in to find the total number of elephants. Tricky if you are in a hurry....
